This Fair Trade Month, we’re highlighting the meaning of Fair Trade Certified while celebrating our partner Numi Tea.
At its core, Fair Trade is designed to protect the livelihoods of those who produce goods by requiring decent and safe working conditions, supporting economic well-being, advocating for gender equity, and protecting human rights.
Fair Trade products have grown in popularity as consumers recognize the importance of the certification and are now available far and wide. In 2015, Bon Appétit became the first food service company to commit to sourcing 100% Fair Trade Certified tea in our cafés. Our partner in this endeavor, Numi Tea, has been with us every step of the way, helping make our commitment a reality.
Since its founding in 1999, Numi has been on a mission to sell 100% Fair Trade Certified tea and more. They’ve forged deep and lasting connections with the agricultural communities they work with around the world, giving back to workers critical to their company’s success.
Numi is an example of a company that bundles Fair Trade and other certifications with their own proprietary programs in a way that creates positive impacts that ripple through supply chains and spur systemic change in the food system.
