Last Tuesday, Bon Appétit Management Company cafés around the country served a 100% local meal in honor of our 9th annual Eat Local Challenge — and dozens of people photographed their all-local lunches for the chance to win some great prizes: signed copies of the latest books from two food-movement luminaries, Cooked by Michael Pollan and Eat Drink Vote by Marion Nestle, and a $200 gift certificate to the farm-to-table restaurant of their choice in their area.
We’ve collected the best of the #eatlocalchallenge-tagged entries here and here, and our judges have selected the entry (pictured above), from Alison Gay, aka @eatburnbalance on Instagram, as the winner!
Ali is a first-year student and rower at the University of Portland, our CEO Fedele Bauccio’s alma mater. For the Eat Local Challenge, she chose the fresh-seared albacore with wheat berries, lentils, Millennium Farms peach purée, and farmer braising greens. And on the side, a salad with vegetables “that came from 33 different local growers”). “Quite a delicious lunch!!!” she told her 2,275 Instagram followers. “I challenge all of you to eat locally today!”
On being told that her photo was our favorite, she wrote to us that “Every single day I try to eat as many local (and organic) foods as I can so this challenge was right up my alley. I enjoyed getting to sample all sorts of local and fresh foods at my Bon Appétit cafe throughout the day. I think it is wonderful what you guys are doing for corporations, universities, and museums. You really are creating a sustainable future and I am so glad I can play a part in creating that future.”
After doing a little research, she chose Meriwether’s for her gift certificate. This Portland locavore haven not only sources from the best that the Willamette Valley has to offer, it has its very own farm.
Honorable mention goes to these entries from Shyla/@swatson429 at Lafayette College via Instagram (below left) and Judy/@magandajpc at our DuPont Café, via Twitter (below right)
Thanks to everyone for supporting their local food movements along with us!
