Trine University’s Historic Building Welcomes Fresh Faces
- by Guest
Trine University in Angola, IN, recently converted the former Lakeshore Depot into a restaurant known as the Depot Grill, where Bon Appétit’s principles of fresh food and locally grown produce are an essential part of the menu.
For the better part of a century, all visitors to the City of Angola were welcomed via the Lakeshore Depot. This historic landmark has been modernized structurally, but every attempt was made to maintain the architectural integrity and history of the building. Much of the flooring, walls, and trim are original, as is the galvanized steel siding. The decor of the restaurant reflects early 20th-century America.
The Depot Grill features a fun and inspired menu from Executive Chef Allen Gross, who recently transferred from Case Western Reserve University. Diners can enjoy creative items such as the Whistle Stop Burger (loaded with grilled mushrooms and Swiss cheese) and the Coal Car (crispy, golden, hand-cut fries, weighted with the Depot’s famously good chili and topped with a mound of shredded cheddar).
Blending old and new, the refurbished Depot Grill ties the architecture and history of Angola to the new Bon Appétit management team at Trine to infuse an exciting dynamic that is poised to successfully take on the record enrollment that Trine is experiencing this year.
