Chief Strategy Officer Maisie Ganzler Takes on Industry ‘Hogwash’ for Animal Welfare Panel

Five panelists on a webinarBon Appétit Management Company’s Chief Strategy and Brand Officer Maisie Ganzler was invited by Niman Ranch to join a virtual panel examining the different levers of change to improve farm animal welfare. Moderated by Naomi Starkman, founder and editor-in-chief of the award-winning news site Civil Eats, the discussion covered California’s Proposition 12, which strengthens space requirements for farm animals and bans the sale of meat in the state produced under conditions that violate these standards, as well as institutional procurement and farmer-to-farmer education.

Maisie shared how Bon Appétit first became interested in animal welfare issues back in 2005, what the pork industry really means by “gestation crate free” (it’s “clear as mud!”), why Proposition 12 is so important, and more. Watch a video-accompanied live transcript of her remarks here, or simply watch the 12-minute clip below.

She was joined by Celize Christy, Next Generation Coordinator with Practical Farmers of Iowa; Rachel Dreskin, U.S. Executive Director of Compassion in World Farming; and John Gilbert a longtime farmer with Niman Ranch. The complete panel discussion is also available.
