ersity pastry chef, at the live dessert demo

The students at Washington University in St. Louis have never had a sweeter Valentine’s Day.

Famous pastry chef Jim Dodge, Bon Appétit’s director of culinary programs, visited Wash U for two very special Valentine’s Day collaborations with the university’s pastry chef Starr Murphy.

Campus was buzzing and Tweeting the week before Saturday afternoon’s event, and a giant crowd attended. The talented duo tantalized students, faculty, staff, and St. Louis community members with live demos of apricot, almond, and sour cherry tortes, double chocolate brownies, and flourless chocolate cake, all prepared in individual portions and distributed during the presentation. The two chefs gamely answered detailed questions from the highly engaged audience about chocolate varieties, humane eggs, equipment, and gluten-free options.

On Monday, for Valentine’s Day, the campus restaurant Ibby’s was all decked out with gorgeous table settings and ready to welcome dinner guests. Campus VIPs, university faculty, and student couples all enjoyed Jim and Starr’s gâteau marjolaîne with raspberry coulis and apple tarte tartin with white chocolate and rum cream. Jim and Starr even demonstrated the two desserts live, much to the diners’ delight.
